What can you do when you are drawn to both science and humanities?

I need to decide on what to major in and get my schedule done but I still can’t decide. I like sciences (biology, physics, and math) and I like humanities and social sciences (anthropology, English, classics, and political science) and I just don’t know what to do. Is there something that combines science and humanities? I would really like to have a career with just a BS or BA even if it is always entry level, I just want to enjoy my classes.

Haha, I have the same problem!

I’ve looked at a bunch of stuff and with a bio or biochem degree you could do something like be an environmental adviser to politicians. Research microbiologists could work with anthropologists to find how diseases affected older civilizations.

You just have to research some of your interests and see where they can be applied together! Good Luck!

Where can I find a contemporary rug for a good price?

September 292009

I’m looking for a rug with red as the main color. It needs to be contemporary/modern with a geometric or abstract design. I’ve tried Target, Pier 1, Pottery Barn, Ikea, West Elm and even Walmart and neither of them have a rug that I just love. Does anyone know of a cool contemporary home store (not on the list) that may have what I’m looking for?

Sometimes you can find nice rugs at Lowe’s or Home Depot. I’ve seen some contemporary designs in bold geometrics at those places. Also, I’ve seen a good selection at www.Overstock.com, on the internet. Their shipping is very low, too. Of course, ordering off the internet is sometimes risky because you can’t actually see what you’re getting. But if you can find a design you like, and the colors don’t have to be an exact "match," or if you can START with the color and work from there, it may be a good solution.

Hope you can find some useful advice here on Answers. Good luck!

What kind of events will draw people to a new shopping centre?

I just started working for a new shopping centre that is mostly food services, not so much clothing, but also some entertainment and speciality shopping. I need to come up with some event ideas to draw people into the building. Don’t worry about budget limitations, but keep in mind the events must be inside the building, we have no parking lots or outdoor space. Any ideas??

I assume you are responsible for driving foot-traffic to the shopping center; that is, just getting the people there. The final sale would be up to the businesses in the center.

DIRECT MAIL:
If the stores in the center are the types of businesses that can offer a special discount or incentive to come in, you should look into doing a direct mail coupon/discount mailer that has "special savings" from each of the stores in the center. Collectively, if all the stores have an ad/coupon in the mailer, it would be a greater incentive to the customer to take advantage of discounts that are all in one shopping center. I’d mail out the mailer to 25-30k residences with in a 5 mile radius of the shopping center,

PROMOTIONAL:
- A sponsored wine, food and shopping night featuring all of your stores. Free for one night. You can make this a dress-up event or a family event depending on the type of people who shop at the center. This will be good for exposure, but it’s uncertain how much long-term business this will generate.

How to write a parabola from a museum admitions question?

September 292009

Posted in museum | 3 Comments »

Ok, here is the question…. A museum has an admission fee of $14 and averages 300 visitors per day. The museum board decides to raise the fee. Research indicates that for every $1 increase, there would be 10 fewer visitors per day. What admission fee would maximize the revenue?

What im looking for is a complete answer with work written out, i am also wondering how make an equation for a porabola from the information given.

x = amount to raise admission fee
Revenue = (14+x)(300 – 10x) [That's fee times # of visitors]
R = -10x^2 +160x +4200
dR/dx = -20x +160 = 0 [Set dR/dx to 0 to find maximum
-20x = -160
x = 8
So 14+8 = $22 admissin fee maximizes revenue

How does Lending a Painting to a Museum work? Will the museums cover the insurance?

My parents are considering selling a valuable painting to avoid having to cover the insurance on it. I would prefer to keep it in the family — does anyone know about lending paintings to museums?

How it works and if they cover the insurance on them?

If not museums anyone know anything else on how to reduce these costs?

Thank You!!

I really don’t know what type of insurance Museums carry but if they have "bailees" coverage, it covers property of others while in their care, custody and control. I would ask the museum. I’m sure they would be glad to answer that part of your question.

Reducing cost is another matter. It it a very valuable painting, and I’m assuming it is based on our question, I wouldn’t try to cut corners in order to save a few bucks. You can insure it only against certain named perils, but if something outside of those perils happens, the painting wouldn’t be covered. For instance, if you didn’t cover it for theft and it was stolen, it wouldn’t be covered.

If you want to keep it in the family, why not volunteer to help defray the cost of insurance. Chip in and it would allow them to keep the painting so that you could one day have the burden of insuring it. lol

Can poetry be categorized as a performing art?

September 292009

I have an oral presentation due soon that requires us to research and present a form of performing art. I was thinking of doing poetry. Can someone help me out with this? Or any other *interesting* suggestions of a performing art?

Back in ancient Greece poetry recitation was a competetive performance art that could earn prizes comparable to the awards won by olympic atheletes. In the 60s, beat poets performed poetry, including important authors such as Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs. Today poetry recitation is a performance art in forensics teams in high schools, and you’ll often see poets performing in coffee shops and stuff.

To me poetry recitation is like playing an instrument, where you take some ink on paper and you bring it to life so that everyone can enjoy it. I mean, writing poetry is an art as writing music is, but the oral interpretation adds a whole extra level to the experience.

How do I contact a gallery about showing my work?

I am a painter, and I just recently put together enough work (I think) for a possible gallery show. How do I go about approaching galleries in order to show my work? Are there places that specialize in new or unknown artists?

Get a book called Artist’s and graphic designers market they have listings of galleries all around the world that accept new artists. Every gallery has a specific way of applying if you approch them the wrong way they might refuse you without looking at your work and that would be a waste of time. I would get the book they explain everything or go on the galleries web sites and find their way of submitting art work. But they don’t always give you that information or if they are accepting new work and what kind of artist work. One big no no is to go and approch the gallery without researching it first, if your work would fit in with the reat of the collection if they even sell your tipe of work, just go in there look around and see if you like it and if it is your ball of wax. and then get them your info through mail or whatever they want.one more thing it is a long process to be accepted .

You know how a lot of really old events, like the birth of Jesus are estimate because they didn’t meticulously watch the calendar back then like we do now. What is the oldest event that we know the exact day of? Post a link to your source if you want the best answer.

How are the road conditions in October driving From Fairbanks, Alaska to lower 48?

September 292009

We plan on driving out of Alaska to the lower 48 in the month of October. What are the road conditions like and how do we find information to help us plan our trip?

I did the Canadian portion of the Alaska Hwy in March and would say that it was probably considerably worse than what they are going to be in October since the roads had a winters worth of snow. October would be amazing with the fall colors and you might hit some snow in at some of the summits in Canada, but as for the Alaskan portion of the AK hwy, its pretty flat until about an hour outside of the Canadian border. There is a nice straight stretch between Delta Junction and Tok. But the one thing that I’ve always liked about travelling the AK hwy any time of year, is that people are considerate and will stop if it looks like you are having trouble. Plus now there is cell service for a good portion of the road. The worst parts of the hwy are between Watson Lake, Yukon and Fort Nelson, BC. There are two tricky spots, Muncho Lake and Stone Mountain. If you overnight in Whitehorse, just leave early so you are sure to hit those two spots during daylight. I did them at night and it had started to snow and I was by myself in a car with no snow tires. I made it through fine, but as long as you prepare for your trip better than I did, you’ll be fine.

For road conditions on the Alaska Hwy call 1877-456-ROAD. Also I’d advise to get a copy of the Milepost. It will help you find services that will be open in the off season if you needed it. Oh and fill up the car in Toad River. Its the last gas station for a while.

But one suggestion that I would make is that if you were thinking of taking the Cassiar Hwy out of the Yukon in to Central BC, I would advise against it. Cassiar is much more isolated and it would be harder to get help if needed. Plus its not paved all the way.

This info will at least get you out of the toughest part of the drive. From there I always have headed east to Edmonton, so I’m not sure about the road conditions for southern BC. But if you’re headed into Alberta at all…its flat. And you’ll be fine.
