What do you wish you knew before your event and what to do to get ready for it?

First, I have no plans, or a horse, to go to my first event, but I would like to know what you wish you had known before your first event(s)? And what do you do to prepare for an upcoming event? What equipment could you not live with out for eventing(besides the obvious)? What did you do or would you do when going to your first event? Thanks for all help, no rude answers please, you know the drill. Thanks!
I was asking about EVENTING not western pleasure.

I wish I would have relaxed more! I was so tense and nervous, it just put my horse in a fluster!

Know your dressage test- it’s extremely important. For the most part, lower level eventing is decided on your dressage score, since XC and stadium usually are not timed, and the lower fences tend to have less refusals and knock downs. Practice. Practice. Practice again. Even if you know the pattern, practice constantly, and make sure that your horse knows what do to also! Practice distinguishing differences between the medium and free walk, round circles are a huge way to get extra points. Push into the corners. When the pattern says "start trotting at A" pick up your trot EXACTLY at A. If you can do exactly as the pattern says, exactly where the pattern says, you will gain lots more points.

I show western pleasure. What i wish i had know was to get there way early, its makes everything easyer when u have lots of time to warm up and always make sure to have extra food so ur horse can munch why he is waiting cause there will be time before ur classes and they can get board easly
