On September 8, 2010, Marissa Mayer and Ben Gomes hosted a search event at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to announce Google Instant. Check out this video from our event.
Google Instant is a new search interface and infrastructure enhancement that is fast and predictive, making search easier by showing you relevant search results instantly on the results page as you type. When people use Instant, we estimate they save between two and five seconds when they search. Globally, this adds up to more than 11 hours saved every second. You can learn more from our blog post: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/09/search-now-faster-than-speed-of-type.html

I can relate to their presentation. A lot of you say its boring, but to a developer, every feature has pain staking effort put into it.
Developer: “When you click on the text input field some ajax is lazy loaded that will monitor key presses, pass the character string to nlp code and an n-gram database, find the closest match, then take the match, query the datacenters and return the results dynamically into the search container”
Everyone Else: “So when i type in the search results show fast!”

watching the Q&A was a waste of time, everything they asked was already gone over or at least assumable. The question I wanted to ask which IS technical and was glossed over a little is:
Othar (what a name btw) explained at one point as you change from a fast connection to a slow connection google instant may turn itself off. I was wondering as one of the many speed limited internet users around the world. At what connection speed is required for Google Instant to be a good experience?

there’s still a page 2 and 2+ in google search?!
@LordOfTheToads …
@LordOfTheToads Google is the number one search engine because it is bad at finding relevant results, and people stop searching for something if they don’t find something relevant in their first three results?
As far as search engines rankings go, most (if not all) major search engines rely heavily on backlinking for relevant results. If you want a higher ranking or more visitors you can try using Adwords to get an advertising block on the front page. We did, and our traffic increased big time!
@MrPointless Yes, I …
@MrPointless Yes, I know all that. I have worked my butt off for a decade, and will continue to do so. I have every right to be pissed. But even if it were okay to have this put back on me (which it isn’t), it does not serve the users to have 3 de-facto choices which are anything but relevant.
Google does not offer relevant results, just ask any SEO guy. By great effort you get to top ranking by backlinking and publishing, the very definition of ‘gamed’ results.
@green929392 Why …
@green929392 Why wouldn’t you want that? It’s quicker, intuitive, and gives you more accurate search results. What’s the drawback?
@LordOfTheToads …
@LordOfTheToads With all due respect, Google isn’t made for the advertisers, it’s made for the users. In essence to give users more relevant results. If you aren’t getting enough traffic after the Instant-rollout, you need to change your advertising strategy.

I turned it off. Very annoying.
I am blown away at why would Google do something like this and invest so much into research and implementation without running surveys to see if people actually want it first!
