We are going to a gallery reception, and don’t know what to give to the artist who invited us.
You aren’t obligated (or expected) to bring a gift to an artist’s exhibition opening. If, however, the artist is a particularly good friend, you might bring some small personal token like a bottle of their favorite wine, for example.

Frankly the artist would be much happier if you actually bought an art work! (But that’s not required either, I hasten to add.)
A gift not only isn’t necessary, but it would be quite awkward. Just go and enjoy the showing. Some praise of the artist’s work would be very nice if it can be given sincerely. Purchasing a piece would be even better if you’re so inclined. But it’s quite enough to simply congratulate the artist on having his/her own show, how nice it is, and to thank him/her for inviting you.
