Did you know that the Iraq war destroyed priceless artifacts from Iraqi museums?

Artifacts that dated back to Mesopotamia. In fact the only Ministry of Iraq that did not get looted by rioters was the Oil ministry. Go figure. The looting of Iraqi museums has been equated to a modern day burning of the Library of Alexandria.

I heard that those artifacts depicted the existence of extraterrestrials that once roamed the Earth and f***ed up the human race’s DNA, and that those artifacts were stolen for that reason.

Yes but it was due to looting by Iraqis mostly. Your facts are off, you should check them.

Iraqis stole from their own museums before the Americans even got within shell shot of baghdad and sold the artifacts on the black market.

Some countries you cannot help until they are willing to help themselves first and protect what is important.

All the mankind knows it – and that brings very little honuor to the US. Everybody considers America guilty for allowing the looting

The Iraqi army were the ones who took a defensive position inside the museum in Baghdad. The looting of the museum was carefully orchestrated. In the museum proper, only 40 items of high value were stolen. The vaults were looted (by employees with keys) of fakes and some valuable items.

The reason that the Baghdad Museum looked so bare in photos? The staff had a plan for invasion that had been in effect for most than 20 years. It had been developed during the Iran-Iraq War and used again during the Gulf War. Most items weren’t looted, they were stored away.

For an amazing story on faithful museum employees risking torture, death and more to protect their nation’s heritage, look into the Bactrian Hoard. What the Afghani’s did to protect it from the Russians and Taliban are nothing short of heroic

Of the items stolen, the 3 most valuable items on exhibit were returned, and many smaller items kept in the vaults were returned or recovered.

The true damage to Iraqi history is done at the hands of looters of archeological digs. For many people it’s the only way they can survive or the only way they can get rich (an Italian looter made and lost two multi-million dollar fortunes). Sure, the items have value both monetarily and historically, but without their archeological context, they teach us a lot less than they would had they been professionally excavated.

This is a problem that’s been mostly solved in South and Central America. Archeologists have been teaching local villagers proper techniques and paying them for their work. In return, the villagers protect their sites from looters.

Don’t forget that any site mentioned in the Bible had US troops stationed there to protect it, but the foundations of the Ishtar Gate were dug up for some latrines!

Gotta love those pro Republican Christian Rightwingers!
